Staying Safe from "Tech Support" Scams
Local reports of phone scams are rising. Here is how to verify if a caller is legitimate.
Warning: Tech support scams are increasing in the Ottawa/Gatineau region. If you receive an unexpected call claiming to be from Microsoft, your ISP, or any tech company, hang up and call us at (613) 455-6364 to verify.
How Tech Support Scams Work
Scammers call unsuspecting victims claiming to be from well-known tech companies like Microsoft, Apple, or your internet service provider. They create a sense of urgency by claiming your computer has a virus, has been hacked, or is sending error reports.
Their goal is to gain remote access to your computer, steal your personal information, or convince you to pay for fake "tech support services" that can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars.
Red Flags to Watch For
Unsolicited Phone Calls
Legitimate companies like Microsoft, Apple, or your ISP will never call you out of the blue to tell you there's a problem with your computer. If you didn't initiate contact, it's a scam.
Requests for Remote Access
The scammer will ask you to download software like TeamViewer, AnyDesk, or similar programs to "fix the problem." Once they have access, they can install malware, steal files, or access your banking information.
Pressure and Scare Tactics
Scammers create artificial urgency: "Your computer will be disabled in 24 hours!" or "Hackers are accessing your bank account right now!" This pressure is designed to make you act without thinking.
Payment Requests
They'll ask for payment via gift cards, wire transfer, cryptocurrency, or other untraceable methods. No legitimate tech support company accepts payment this way.
What to Do if You're Targeted
-
1
Hang up immediately.
Don't engage in conversation. Simply hang up the phone.
-
2
Do not download anything.
Never install remote access software at the request of an unsolicited caller.
-
3
Block the number.
Add the caller's number to your phone's block list to prevent future calls.
-
4
Report it.
Report the scam to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
If You've Already Given Access
If you've already allowed a scammer remote access to your computer, take these steps immediately:
- Disconnect from the internet (unplug ethernet or turn off WiFi)
- Run a full antivirus scan
- Change all your passwords from a different device
- Contact your bank if you shared financial information
- Call a trusted local technician to check your system
